Anxiety

Overview

Together with stress, anxiety is the most common mental disorder in the USA. It often co-exists with depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Anxiety disorders are illnesses that cause people to feel frightened and apprehensive for no apparent reason. Individuals may have more than one type of anxiety disorder. Women suffer from this disorder much more than men. The varieties include:

  • Panic Disorder - usually in early childhood
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - may occur at any age, usually after a traumatic event
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder - in this variety there is chronic excessive worrying about health, finances, family, and work

Management

The doctor will first meet with the individual and go into detail about their symptoms, medical past, etc. A management plan can then be developed and a specialized health game plan will be given to the patient, which may include some of the following:

  • Change of diet
  • Avoiding stimulants
  • Supplements
  • Adequate sleep
  • Avoiding situations of stress/precipitating anxiety-laden environment
  • Regular exercise
  • Taking regular breaks from stressful situations at work or home
  • Massage therapy
  • Aromatherapy (calming scents include lavender, neroli, lemon balm, chamomile, geranium and clary sage)
  • Centering of mind (meditation/yoga/Tai Chi)
  • Breathing exercises to relax
  • Herbals (can be extremely beneficial; best results are achieved when very specific herbals are recommended based on your individual needs)

Working one on one with the doctor, we will fight to find the underlying reason and manage your anxiety so that you can go back to living a healthy, normal life.
