Cervicitis

Overview

Cervicitis, also known as cervical inflammation, is most often caused by a cervical infection usually acquired during sexual activity. More than half of all women will be affected by cervicitis at some point during their adult life. Cervicitis can result from sexually transmitted diseases, such as:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Genital Herpes
  • Chlamydia
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

Not all cases of cervicitis result from a sexually transmitted diseases. Other noninfectious causes can include allergies to spermicides in birth control or latex condoms, or devices inserted into the pelvic area (such as a diaphragm).
