Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, more commonly known as Chronic (Complex) Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is a chronic neurological syndrome occurring in the upper or lower extremities, and often preceded by a traumatic event. The condition can also occur post-surgery, or without incident. The involved extremity becomes enlarged and discolored with inflammatory swelling and is sensitive to the touch, giving rise to pain symptoms that may gradually increase in severity.
There are two types of CRPS – type 1 (RSD) and type 2 (Causalgia). In RSD cases, the nerve injury cannot be immediately identified. Causalgia occurs as a result of an identifiable “major” nerve injury. Both types can be described as an injury to the nerve or soft tissue that does not follow the normal healing path. At Houston Wellness Clinic, we help patients with type 1 and type 2 RSD.Back to Top

At Houston Wellness Clinic, our non-invasive approaches to managing CRPS include:
Decreasing inflammation in the region. We use high levels of targeted omega 3 supplements that are a source of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. Part of the anti-inflammatory strategy is to decrease free radicals, which are present in increased amounts in this condition.
Supplying increased oxygen to the affected area. Oxygen aids the functional, restorative and increased energy production capabilities to the region and provides better nourishment to the tissues in the affected area. We achieve this with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), with ozone bags wrapped around the affected area.
Stimulating electron transfer to provide nourishment and improved enzymatic, blood cell and tissue function through Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency (PEMF).
We also use supportive measures such as energy substrates to facilitate energy production, pain medications and essential oils either applied locally or gently massaged in the regions affected by CRPS that help to restore neural functions.
