Enhanced Athletic Performance

Although exercise has many benefits, it does come with downsides as well. These need to be acknowledged so that ways sought to minimize them can be practiced. Moderate exercise has been shown to improve immunity along with other benefits, but extreme and prolonged exercise suppresses the immune system. Of great importance is being aware of what times of day the highest ozone levels are and avoiding these times during training since elevated ozone levels increase oxidative stress.

Management Options

Interventional Procedures Pre-Performance

  • High dose vitamin C with mega doses of minerals/antioxidants
  • Hydrogen peroxide (delivers oxygen to tissues, removing any underlying minor infections)
  • Massage (helps lymph flow to remove toxins, decreases amounts of lactic acid present, helps healing of strained muscles, improves muscle function with the addition of concomitant stretching)
  • Photon beam energy (facilitates lymph drainage and removal of waste products)

Eating the correct amount of calories is not the only nutrition athletes need to consider. The following are very important points to consider in being the healthiest athlete:

    Preventing Oxidative Stress

Ozone affects lung function, and also adds to the amount of free radicals caused by intense exercise. Clearly, the addition of antioxidants protects the lungs during exercise and reduces the amounts of free radicals that may cause damaging effects to DNA, etc. These antioxidants include vitamins, especially C, B, D3 and E. Other very important antioxidants include NAC, alpha-lipoic acid, grape seed, bioflavonoids, caffeine-free green tea, selenium, and superoxide dismutase. Additionally, the short-chain amino acids found in whey protein increase glutathione which is the body's most important water-soluble antioxidant that is essential for immunity.

Preventing Mineral Depletion and Improving Join Health

Exercise increases the use and the excretion of minerals. Therefore, a good diet often with the addition of bioavailable calcium, magnesium, potassium and boron is necessary. Nutrients known to improve joint function and health include glucosamine, chondroitin, SAMe, hydrolyzed gelatin, omega-3 fatty acids, GLA and antioxidants. Training with significant added weight to weight-bearing joints on hard surfaces where continual pressure is exerted on the hips, knees and ankles has the potential to accelerate degeneration of these joints. Exercising with appropriate custom-designed shoes that eradicate mechanical mal-alignment is extremely important. This assumes greater importance the longer the exercise and the harder the surface areas used.

    Reducing Inflammation

Inflammation is increased during exercise. This inflammation level is further increased with the addition of a high sugar/refined carbohydrate diet and the addition of animal fats, or arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is a precursor to prostaglandin E2 and pro-inflammatory leukotriene B. Vitamin K suppresses IL-6 (pro-inflammatory messenger), DHA (fish oils*) suppresses TNF-alpha, IL-1(b), IL-6 and LTB (4). *Fish oils have experimentally shown to suppress up to 90% of dangerous leukotrienes in rheumatoid arthritis.

    Maintaining Optimal Performance

Upholding mitochondrial health is done with many vitamins, minerals and supplements that are needed specifically for an active body that continuously puts stress on itself through prolonged and extreme exercise.

Additionally, one must remove heavy metal toxic burden with oral or IV chelation. Heavy metals impact the function of energy generated within mitochondria.

Each athlete's body varies in what it needs to perform to its maximum potential. This depends on the person's body type, activity, goals, hormonal makeup, and much more. A personalized plan with a combination of supplements, minerals, vitamins, proteins, thermogenic compounds, and much more should be created. Following a personalized regiment will result in powerful, natural results.

When chlorophyll is present as a whole organic natural food where there is a high assimilation of nutrients that are bound together by co-factors, they work synergistically, making them more potent and effective than man-made supplements. The high chlorophyll content increases oxygen uptake, so improved performance by muscles is experienced. The low molecular weight polypeptide amino acids in some of these supplements (E3L) are pre-digested and easily cross the blood-brain barrier, directly feeding the higher master glands in the brain. Chlorophyll is a natural detoxifier and helps to remove waste metabolites generated by metabolic performance.

Sea plant nutrients that are basic algae that contain chlorophyll provide these necessary assimilated phytonutrients. Fucoidan found in seaweed also down regulates inflammation, enhancing the immune system. This substance also has the ability to bind to certain toxins and facilitate their elimination from the body.

Citrulline supports the body's detoxification, clearing the liver of ammonia, and converting it to urea for excretion so muscles recover more readily after exercise. Waste products produced from rapid or continued high performance exercise (anaerobic energy) include lactic acid, ammonia and IMP (inosine monophosphate, a nucleoside). Citrulline carries ammonia to liver mitochondria for conversion to urea. L-Arginine is a powerful amino-acid which, like citrulline, is a key intermediate in the Krebs urea cycle (energy-creating cycle). Nitric oxide is formed from arginine, which mediates smooth muscle relaxation and thus reduces workload on heart (metabolism to nitric oxide mediated through nitric oxide synthase). Arginine is a substrate for NOS and is also involved in the pathway to synthesize growth hormone as well as other steps of protein synthesis.

Alkalinizing the Body

This serves a number of functions to enhance athletic performance:

  • Superior enzymatic function
  • Decrease necessity of buffering essential minerals such as magnesium and calcium. This is achieved through diet, drinking alkaline water and adding alkaline drops or powder to fluids. The creation of acidic medium in body is often due to the consumption of the very foods that are detrimental to optimal athletic performance such as sugar (oxidative stress) and saturated fats (inflammation)

The Houston Wellness Clinic first starts helping the patient by getting a complete background, finding out the patient's goals, and ordering blood testing if necessary. The doctor can then determine exactly what management plan and therapies to use for each individual patient to help them reach their goals as well as achieve optimal wellness.

If we fill our hours with regrets of yesterday and with worries of tomorrow, we have no today in which to enjoy our existence. Seize the day, and take control of your health and life. How you are going to live those tomorrows will depend on how you act and choose today. - George Allibone M.D.
