HBOT - Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Overview

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is medicine's most efficient way of transporting oxygen throughout the body. HBOT not only delivers oxygen through hemoglobin, but due to the increased pressure, the oxygen dissolves in the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord, lymph and other body fluids. This results in increased delivery of oxygen to the tissues, and the additional oxygen is important in supplying the much needed oxygen to areas with limited blood flow.

Hyperbaric oxygen has a multitude of other benefits that include: curbing infection through its boosting the immune system, flooding harmful anaerobic organisms with “unfriendly” oxygen, promoting the growth of new capillaries and blood vessels, especially in areas with poor circulation, and boosting collagen formation for faster wound healing. Stem cells are mobilized and rejuvenated. A full course of HBOT may increase stem cells by 800%.

You will have the benefit of a large chamber that can fit up to two people. A typical session lasts 60-90 minutes. You will be breathing pure oxygen at 10 liters per minute versus 6 liters at normal atmospheric pressure. The increased flow rate is to overcome the resistance to oxygen flow secondary to the 1.3 atmospheric pressure within the chamber. As the pressure is gradually increased you may notice increased pressure in your ears, similar to that of a flight landing. This is usually the only discomfort. If you are severely claustrophobic, you may wish for someone to drive you to the facility, as the administration of valium will ease your anxiety. However, this is very unusual as the chamber is large enough to accept at least two people. You will be in constant touch and communication with at least one technician on the outside. You may wish to listen to music during the management, and you are encouraged to move around within the chamber during the procedure. The increase and decrease in pressure is carefully monitored and controlled by the staff. In a small percentage of cases ear pressure correction is delayed. If this happens, we stop the increase in pressure with an escape valve until you are ready for another increase.

If we fill our hours with regrets of yesterday and with worries of tomorrow, we have no today in which to enjoy our existence. Seize the day, and take control of your health and life. How you are going to live those tomorrows will depend on how you act and choose today. - George Allibone M.D.
