Metabolic therapy is an adjunctive therapy used in managing cancer patients that are either using these alone, or with certain anti-cancer dietary foodstuffs and instructions of which pro-cancer dietary substances to avoid. The therapy is a combination of supplements to stimulate and modulate the immune system, which is critical in overcoming cancer. It also utilizes the body's innate ability to destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, the immune system is compromised in chemotherapy and radiation where destruction of healthy cells and cancer cells happens simultaneously thereby compromising the body's ability to overcome the cancer cells once chemotherapy is discontinued.
Metabolic therapy consists secondly of supplements that play a supportive role in reducing the amount of inflammation and oxidative stress due to free radical formation produced by cancer cells. Inflammation and oxidative stress can also be caused by consuming foodstuffs that should be avoided when cancer is present, such as sugar, refined carbohydrates, and inflammation-causing animal fats. These supportive supplements consist of "natural" anti-inflammatories and antioxidants.
A further very important component of metabolic therapy is liver support through the addition of certain herbs that benefit the immune and lymphatic systems. There are also certain enzymes that act specifically to reduce blood supply to cancer cells and increase the rate of apoptosis, or cancer cell death. In addition, these enzymes break the protein bonds between cancer cells, and are experimentally shown to suppress the genes that normally up-regulate cancer cell growth. These adjuncts are very important in helping overcome cancer together with specialized IV therapy especially since it is well known that about 2% of cancers have MDR cells, or Multiple Drug Resistant cells, that do not respond to chemotherapeutic agents. Since toxins play a significant role in compromising the patient's ability to fight cancer, body purification and a healthy gastrointestinal tract are paramount.
Since many cancers are hormonally-sensitive, steps are taken in metabolic therapy to decrease the amount of offending hormones and to stimulate protective mechanisms in the body to negate the influence of hormones on the tumor growth.Back to Top
"I was diagnosed 2 years ago with highly malignant tumor of the brain... 95% of my tumor was removed surgically. I then ambarked on a course of anti-cancer therapy advocated by Dr. Allibone. At present it appears there is no return, or increase in size of the residual tumor..." - William M. (Brain Cancer)
